Natural Remedies for Acne
Introduction
My struggle with acne began at 15, manifesting in chronic flare-ups. Determined to find a solution, I tried every over-the-counter acne regimen, including Proactiv and Clinique's dedicated acne line. However, these attempts always failed. My doctor or dermatologist, I can’t even remember who at this point, recommended hormonal birth control as the solution to my acne. At 15, I opted to pursue this route, because I was under the impression it was fixing my acne, only to later find out it was just a well-placed bandaid.
While birth control did effectively manage my acne, allowing me to sleep with makeup on without next-day blemishes, I experienced a series of concerning symptoms during the seven years I continued its use. Ultimately, I decided to stop hormonal birth control. By the age of 22, the acne returned with a vengeance, accompanied by a wave of other symptoms. It was almost like the birth control made me numb and disconnected from my body. Removing it restored the connection and I began to feel everything.
The pandemic further complicated my journey for clear skin. Despite adopting a “clean” eating approach, eliminating daily makeup use, and implementing a diligent facial cleansing routine, my acne persisted. Seeking further guidance, I opted for a new virtual dermatologist who presented spironolactone and Accutane as potential treatment options. While I filled the prescription for spironolactone, I had one last question before I took the plunge. I emailed my derm and asked, “How long will I have to take this?” His answer was “Forever”. Again not a solution but a bandaid. I ultimately decided against this medication and the life-long sentence. Back to square one. This is when I directed my energy towards researching and implementing a holistic approach to acne management.
Natural Remedies for Acne
It became clear that natural remedies worked best when combined with addressing the underlying root causes of acne. These root causes can be diverse, ranging from chronic infections (bacterial, viral, fungal) to heavy metal toxicity, mold exposure, gut imbalances, and micronutrient deficiencies. Importantly, acne often has a mental and emotional component that needs attention alongside the physical symptoms.
Here are some recommendations I share with clients struggling to overcome acne:
Dietary Tweaks & Lifestyle Habits:
Dairy-Free: Cutting out dairy can significantly reduce inflammation, excess testosterone, and blood sugar fluctuations, all of which contribute to acne breakouts. While some people tolerate dairy well, others, like myself, are extremely sensitive. A 30-to 90-day dairy-free trial can help identify if dairy is a trigger for you.
Egg-Free: Similar to dairy, reducing egg consumption, particularly the whites, can be beneficial. The protein in egg whites (albumin) can be difficult for some bodies to digest, leading to inflammation and breakouts.
Gluten-Free: While not a direct acne culprit for everyone, gluten can contribute to gut dysbiosis, immune activation, and leaky gut, all of which can manifest as acne in some women. Reducing or eliminating gluten can address these underlying issues and improve skin health.
Hydration: Increasing water intake significantly improves skin hydration and overall well-being. Many clients have seen a noticeable reduction in breakouts by simply increasing their daily water consumption to at least 80 ounces.
Stress Management: Stress manifests in various ways, including acne breakouts. Whether it's intense exercise or a constant "go-go-go" mentality, the stress response disrupts hormonal balance, including testosterone, a key player in acne development. By incorporating stress management techniques and even adjusting workout intensity, you can reduce cortisol (the stress response hormone) production and promote hormonal balance.
Expanding Your Acne-Fighting Arsenal: Beyond Diet and Lifestyle
While we've focused on dietary and lifestyle changes, it's crucial to address potential environmental triggers. Many common household products, from cleaning supplies to cosmetics, contain endocrine-disrupting (also known as hormone-disrupting) chemicals that can worsen acne.
Take a critical look at everything in your home, including cleaning products, skincare, makeup, and haircare. Scrutinize the ingredient lists and eliminate anything containing endocrine disruptors. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) Database allows you to check the safety of various household products, including cleaning supplies. ClearStem Pore Clogging Ingredient Checker specifically targets makeup, skincare, and hair care products, helping you identify ingredients that may exacerbate acne.
Remember: Consistency is key! Implementing these changes alongside the previous recommendations may take time, but their cumulative effect can be significant. Don't be discouraged by setbacks – track your progress and celebrate your victories! By combining holistic strategies with a little detective work, you can create a personalized approach to overcoming acne and achieving clear, healthy skin.
